Corn Discovery Plot Data Informs Seed Decisions

The results of Federated’s corn Discovery Plots are in, and the results are worth a good look. Both the Discovery Plot (DP) and Answer Plot® (AP) data charts are posted, offering solid information as you make seed choices for 2025.

Having a variety of information is “powerful,” according to Kevin Carlson, Federated’s agronomy sales manager. Federated never recommends looking at one plot, or one set of data – “we have to be careful using just one data point,” said Carlson.

Answer Plots are replicated and Discovery plots provide strip data from local fields. Together, that data can “marry up” – when the results from one match up with results from the other. In those instances, “it’s a pretty good lock,” he said.

For example, Dekalb 9214 was “absolutely phenomenal,” Carlson said. Brevant 91W had a really good year, and Dekalb 10135 also performed well in both the Answer Plots and Discovery Plots. (Note: Dekalb 9214, which is a new product, unfortunately will not be available in large supply for 2025, but production will ramp up for 2026.)

Carlson noted that both the DP and AP results provide “really good data.” And, he said, “We are seeing crossovers between DP and AP data, as well as repeats.” Those products are “pretty much a lock” when it comes to being recommended for subsequent years’ seed choice.

Carlson added a note of caution: These seed products need to be “treated right – planted in the right environment” if growers hope to see results that mimic the plots. Your Federated Agronomists are here to help interpret the results and compare them to your planting environment(s)!

Coming soon: 2024 response-to (RT) scores from the Answer Plots. RT scores rate each hybrid for its response to fungicides, nitrogen, and population (individual categories). RT scores identify how well a hybrid will “pay you back” for what you put into it. Stay tuned for more info on response-to scores.

In the meantime, talk to your Federated Agronomist with any questions about seed for next season. (2023 RT scores are still available.)
